Why did my Shopify inventory change when nobody touched it?

Updated 2026-10-21. Checked against Shopify's own documentation; links are under Sources.

Almost every stock change in Shopify is logged with what caused it and who or what made it. Open the variant's adjustment history and read the Activity and Created by columns for the row where the number moved. Usually the cause is an order, an app or sales channel syncing stock, a CSV import, or a change at a different location.

Step 1: find the row where it changed

  1. Go to Products, open the product, and open the variant.
  2. Click View adjustment history (inventory tracking must be on).
  3. Find the row where Available or On hand jumped. Each quantity column shows the change first, then the new total.
  4. Read Activity ("the event that caused the adjustment") and Created by ("the staff member, app, or sales channel that made the adjustment").

This screen only covers the last 180 days. For anything older, or to look across many products, use Analytics › Reports › Inventory adjustment changes. Its data goes back to October 1, 2023.

Step 2: match the cause

These are the usual suspects. Which ones apply depends on how your store is set up.

Orders, returns and edits

A sale lowers available stock. A restocked return or a cancelled order can raise it again. If the row points to an order, open that order and check its timeline.

An app or sales channel

Inventory sync apps, marketplace connectors, ERPs, warehouse and 3PL integrations all write stock levels. When Created by names an app, check that app's settings. Two tools both trying to own the same number is a classic cause of counts that keep going back to an old value.

A CSV import

Importing a product CSV with overwrite existing products turned on can set quantities too, if the file has an inventory quantity column. An export that's a week old, imported today, puts back last week's stock. Before you import, delete the inventory columns unless you mean to change stock.

Point of sale and other locations

If you sell in person or stock several locations, check which location the row is for. A transfer or a POS sale at another location changes that location's count, not the one you're looking at. A product can look fine in one place and be at zero in another.

Duplicate SKUs or barcodes

Many sync tools match on SKU or barcode. When two variants share one, an update meant for one can land on the other. Run your product export through the duplicate finder. It takes a minute and rules this cause out.

Overselling settings

When "continue selling when out of stock" is on, available stock can go below zero. That's not a counting error, but it can look like one. The product CSV has a column for this setting, so you can see which products have it turned on.

A person

If Created by is a staff member, ask them. People often fix a count after finding stock, or adjust the wrong variant by mistake.

Step 3: put it right

  1. Do a physical count of the item at that location.
  2. Set the correct quantity and pick the closest adjustment reason, so the next person can see why it changed.
  3. If an app caused it, fix the app's mapping or turn off its inventory sync for that product, or the wrong number will come back.

Stop it happening again
